How Sports Wagering Odds Are Made - Who Makes Them?

Many bettors don't have a clue where betting odds for their favorite sports come from. How and who makes those point spreads for Sunday's football games? Who decides who's the favorite and the underdog and how? It all starts in a place called Las Vegas.

Oddsmaking companies in Las Vegas such as LVSC (Las Vegas Sports Consultants, Inc.) provide sportsbooks and casinos with their odds and betting lines. They have been in business since the early 80's and are one of the most important lines makers in Nevada.

There a group of odds makers (more hardcore sports fans than anything else) figure these odds analyzing trends and statistics of each team and using their own personal criteria. Every individual expert has his own team rating and ranking system, this is used to come up with an initial betting line that then is discussed with the other lines making experts in a meeting. They take into account other aspects and agree to a final line that is then released to sportsbooks around the world.

One thing most people don't realize is that the final goal of betting lines is not to predict a winner in a particular sporting event; it's designed to split the opinion of bettors, make then wager as evenly as possible on both sides of the event. Let's take for example a game between Broncos (+1) and 49ers (-1), sportsbooks don't want 90% of their bettors take San Francisco at -1 and the remaining 10% betting on Denver. They need to have as close to a 50%-50% ratio as possible.

In order to achieve this balance on both sides of the betting line, wagering establishments move the line on one side if the other is getting too much action, that's why there are differences in betting odds from every sportsbook.

Instead of thinking of this as something negative for bettors, many use it to their benefit and look around for differences that would actually suit them better.

Known as the Grand Canyon of India - Zanskar offers almost the same thrills of scaling virgin cliffs in Arizona. Of course... it's at your own peril because no amount of preparation or training will make it easy for scaling these threatening heights as you are dealing with hundreds of kilometres of 'never-scaled-before' natural inclines. So no precedence! A remote geography, cut off from the rest of the world for more than half the year, with no road entrance, is this awesome terrains of tall rocky gorges with steep gradient cliffs - a dream come true for any rock climber or rappeller. And to add to all this joy is the roaring River Zanskar that flows in the ravine below. This is the place to be if you want extreme adventure in your canyoning endeavours. The only way into Zanskar is by Trekking through the high Mountain Passes - the Pensi La and the Umasi La, which makes the journey to this area just as interesting and adventurous if not more. Visit Zanskar between June and September for trekking and rappelling.

And if you're 'pro-sub-zero' then wait till its winter when the Zanskar temperatures plummet to about -40 degrees Celsius and freezes the monstrous river into a thick blanket of ice. Popularly known as 'Chader Trek' - this walk on the frozen river is nothing short of a miracle as it entails avoiding falling through cracks in ice into freezing cold river water underneath. It's this unpredictability with a tinge of danger that makes this adventure sport so attractive and addicting! It's a 10-day 'trek and camp' venture which entails steep rocky mountain climbing, treading frozen ice for days, camping in the ice caves alongside the river and traversing the terrain with complex moves and skills - which is more adventure than what Benxi frozen river has to offer. Frozen Zanskar is at its best in December and January. From Jammu, Zanskar can be approached from 2 routes - one is via Srinagar which is about 750 kilometres and the other is via Leh which is about 1300 kilometres.

One of the highest Helicopter skiing resorts in the world is the Gulmarg Ski Village at 9850 feet altitude - offering 22 peaks above 13150 feet and 44 peaks around 12,000 feet elevation. Gulmarg puts extreme in heli-skiing - a must for all the snow-hungry powder-hounds of the world. Imagine being propelled 10,000 feet up to a peak of an immaculate snowy mountain where all you see in the 360 degree panorama are more peaks of mountains? Imagine you are the only dot of colour on this colossal canvas of whiteness? Imagine the only sound u can hear is that of your breathing with an occasional swooshing of a zephyr? Imagine the chill of the altitude is not the only chill that's running down your spine? Imagine that rush of being on top of the world and that feeling of touching the sky? And then imagine taking a deep breath and jumping off that peak onto its steep slopes and skiing at an uncontrollable high-velocity for thousands of vertical metres. This is not just a description of Heli-skiing. It's a promise of Gulmarg - all the chills and thrills and more than what you get at Gstaad. Gulmarg is just 55 kilometres southwest of the State capital - Srinagar.

No less a challenge than mountaineering - is White Water Rafting Expedition on the turbulent river Indus on a raft, canoe or a kayak. You need the guts of an adventurous teenager for this sport. Crashing and splashing along with 13,000 cubic feet of water per second, against the gorges and rocky outcrops and falling with the ice-cold water at deep gradients and gushing with the racing river for kilometres in the upper reaches in the Himalayas is what you can expect from white water rafting on River Indus. And River Zanskar can bestow the same attention on you. Between July and September is when the river offers the full spectrum of rapids - which suits both a first-timer and is suitable for a pro. This river-ride is the most scenic run which offers breathtaking views of the steep rocky canyons and deserted rocky valleys - but of course if you've hit Grade III rapids by then - it won't matter as all you'd be wondering then is how to remain in your raft on the that wildly surging stretch of the river. Sports Massage Will Benefit Athletes Before, During, and After Competition

Athletes can't take their bodies for granted if they want them to perform at peak levels. That's why it's not uncommon to see athletic trainers, physical therapists, and massage therapists lining the sidelines at sporting events, ready to step in and help coax each athlete's body to do its job. Before and after games, matches, or races, athletes often spend time with those same wellness professionals in a locker room or physical therapy area.

But what do wellness pros actually do to benefit first-class athletes? One common application used for injury prevention and treatment, as well as general health maintenance, is sports massage. Sports massage is a therapeutic technique-no soft music, dim lighting, or aromatherapy candles required. Instead, the goal is to guide the muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons, and other body parts to perform better, recover from injury faster, and last longer.

Sports hobbyists and topflight athletes alike can benefit from sports massage, because the massage therapist approaches each body differently. Whether you're a twice-a-week runner with a stiff knee or a professional figure skater with a pulled hamstring, targeted massage can result in significant improvements. Massage therapists who work with athletes must understand the specific physiological needs of various sports, including muscles that are called upon often and those that tend to be weak or injured. They must also be able to assess specific bodies to find weaknesses and tight areas that should be addressed through sports massage.

Sports massage is commonly administered:

Pre-event: Athletes must warm up properly before competing, and sports massage can be part of that warm up. Massage can loosen tight muscles and enhance blood circulation, decreasing the time it takes an athlete to get "in the zone" once the competition begins. Depending on the sport, the massage therapist can aim to relax or stimulate relevant muscles.

Mid-event: Muscles can cramp or spasm through intense activity. Having a massage therapist on hand to quickly work out the kinks or stop the spasm can mean an athlete can finish competing, maybe even coming out stronger than before. For instance, a football quarterback might get a quick massage for his throwing shoulder between quarters or while his team is on defense.

Post-event: Just as athletes need to warm up, they also need to cool down after an event. Stopping abruptly at the end of a rigorous exercise period can result in muscle spasm and lactic acid buildup, meaning more soreness the next day. Post-event massage therapy can relieve soreness and increase blood flow to tight, fatigued muscles. During this post-game massage, the athlete can also conduct a physical check-in: Does anything hurt more than it should? How did the body perform today? What areas could benefit from further training, physical therapy, a more in-depth massage, or even first-aid treatment before the next game or event?

Beyond the time immediately surrounding an intensive competition or practice, sports massage is valuable as a maintenance regimen. Athletes can get a full-length massage once a week or every two weeks, for instance, with the goal of improving range of motion and muscle flexibility, or of combating muscle imbalances that could lead to injury. In terms of injury recovery and rehabilitation, gentle, skilled massage can speed healing and reduce discomfort by increasing circulation to the affected area and relieving swelling and tension. However, once an injury is in the picture, it's always a good idea to speak with a doctor before beginning a massage treatment regimen.
